Obituary of Professor Jean-Claude Healy 

Jean-Claude's sudden death on the Good Friday 21st of March 2008 at his home at L’Arenas F, Peyroles, France was unexpected to his family, friends and colleagues. His departures from this world at the age of 65 was not only a loss to his family and friends but to the world. He dedicated his life to medicine, science, technology, management and improving the life of human being through his knowledge and vision for better and efficient health care. He always shared his knowledge and his innovative ideas with others, helping them to grow and become contributor to a better life and knowledge of citizen.

 

Jean-Claude obtained his MD and PhD from Paris University. He was for 30 years Professor of Biophysics and Medical informatics in several French University Hospitals. He joined the EU DG INFSO in 1995 as Head of Division of the eHealth Unit in Brussels. In 2004 he was seconded to World Health Organization Headquarters (Geneva) as Director in charge of the WHO eHealth strategy. In 2007 he became the Senior Advisor of UN GAID (Global Alliance for ICT and Development), New York, USA for six months before he retired. He is the author of more than 250 scientific publications and many additional administrative documents for the eHealth Resolution (WHA 58 28), WHO eHealth Action Plan, the EU-WHO eHealth Report for the World Summit on Information Society etc.

 

During his impressive professional carrier, he supported the development of many enterprises and individuals in European countries to grow and become important elements for development and application of information technology for efficient health services. He came to World Health Organization to expand his vision and knowledge to the rest of the world and then spent several months at the UN in New York to advise the United Nations on issues related to policy, health and education for better health of citizens of the world. He always provided support to countries, institutions and individuals to learn how to do better in providing health services and education of the citizens. I was fortunate when JC agreed to work in my office at WHO as a Director.  During his tenure the eHealth Strategy was developed and Citizen Centred Health became the centre point of the resolution which was endorsed, in record time, by 192 member states in 2005.

 

He was not only a good friend but helped Leader Health to grow. Few weeks before his sudden death, he travelled with Pascal and a group of colleagues, in an educational/medical tour to HIMSS 08 Orlando and UPMC, Pittsburgh in USA. Later on, he visited me in Geneva when we talked about the future, working together again, as we did in WHO. ?He was full of life, joy, new ideas and was looking forward to continue working with us at Leader Health.  He was planning to spend his time living between his vineyard in France and his new residence facing the Lake Leman and the mountains, in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Pascal, Amy and I, as well as all our colleagues at Leader Health, have lost a true friend. ?Our deepest condolences go to his wonderful family, to whom he was exceptionally close to and very passionate about.

The world has lost an amazing human being who contributed his knowledge and entire life to help the people of our planet. God bless his sole.
